Quick to Hear and Slow to Speak

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 

~ James 1:19-20, ESV ~


One of the five intense emotions a person in recovery begins to manage is that of anger. It is a natural human emotion. Sometimes it is appropriate and necessary. However, our mere disappointments, frustrations, anxieties, fears, and failed expectations become the powder keg of emotional responsiveness. We are quick to anger and slow to hear. Especially when we feel our anger and temper is warranted and justified.

Instead, what we learn in recovery is to shut our mouths and open our ears. We learn to turn from our anger and turn toward God. We bridle our tongue so as not to make fools of ourselves. And, when we do speak, it is in truth, love, compassion, and purity. We become quick to hear and slow to speak.
