First Draft – Don’t Kiss Me Goodbye – Chapter One

Copper Steele rides the ferry Kittitas towards Seattle, feeling the weight of an unsettling atmosphere. He battles his own unease as memories of a past case involving Jasmine Blade flood his mind. It has been eight years since he last visited the city, and the chaotic sounds of urban life do little to stir nostalgia.

He recalls a call from retired detective Stolsky, who shared news of a cold case involving a junkie’s death, reminding Copper of unsolved murders from his past. As he contemplates this, a frail young man approaches, asking for a cigarette. Copper gives him one, momentarily distracted from his dark thoughts.

Upon reaching the dock, Copper encounters a mysterious woman with striking features. They share a flirtatious exchange, but he senses something off about her sudden appearance. As they walk through the bustling Pike Place Market, they discuss a strange smell in the air, heightening his suspicions.

The woman uses her smartphone, adding to the tension. Copper questions her motives, suspecting she has an agenda. Despite their chemistry, he feels an underlying dread. As she leaves in a waiting car, he remains unsettled.

Wandering through the transformed city, Copper longs for a simple breakfast. He finds a coffee shop and settles in, observing the eclectic crowd. After eating, he resolves to find a tobacco store and reach out to Stolsky, but the nagging feeling of unease stays with him.
