Chapter One – Summary
In a one-room apartment in Seattle, Copper Steele contemplates life while listening to the rain. The sounds of nightlife echo below, pulling him toward the vibrant streets. He notices Shania Savage, a striking figure, standing outside. With whiskey in hand, Copper Steele feels a mix of anticipation and dread as he approaches her.
Shania boldly states she wants a relationship, but Copper Steele hesitates, expressing his inability to commit. This declaration surprises Shania and brings a painful reaction. She challenges Steele’s decision, insisting he cannot simply push her away. Despite the emotional exchange, the protagonist believes they must protect Shania from their chaotic life.
As Shania walks away, Copper Steele feels regret and confusion. He heads to a local bar where the bartender, Joe, tries to offer advice on love. Despite the lively atmosphere, Steele feels distant, trapped by his own fears. Joe presses Steele on whether he is running from something, but he denies it.
Later, alone in his messy apartment, a knock on the door reveals Shania back again. She demands to talk, and despite a desire to comfort her, Copper Steele holds back. Shania insists on understanding the reason behind his reluctance. She confronts him about his fears of failing her, arguing that everyone has baggage, and she wants to work through it together.
Copper Steele feels the walls of his defenses begin to crumble as he realizes Shania’s sincerity. He tentatively chooses to be with her, marking a shift in his outlook. As he embraces, the weight of his fear’s lifts, and hope emerges. Together, they prepare to face the challenges ahead, knowing their journey is just starting.
