Ownership of Faith & Reason Content

Unless otherwise stated, original content published through Faith & Reason is owned by Timothy R. Berman and protected to the extent provided by applicable copyright and intellectual-property laws.

Original content may include:

• Articles and theological studies;
• Latter-day Saint apologetic responses;
• Biblical and scriptural commentary;
• Christian-history studies;

Free Downloadable Educational Resources

Faith & Reason may make certain slide presentations, acrostic studies, infographics, lesson handouts, worksheets, study materials, and other resources available as free downloads.

Unless a particular resource states otherwise, materials intentionally offered as free downloads may be used without requesting advance written permission for noncommercial educational, devotional, ministry, and personal-enrichment purposes.

Permitted Teachers, Groups, and Settings

Free downloadable resources may be used by:

• Gospel Doctrine and Sunday School teachers;
• Come Follow Me classes;
• Families using Come Follow Me at home;
• Relief Society classes;
• Elders quorum classes;
• Youth classes and activities;
• Seminary and institute teachers;
• Bible-study groups;
• Small groups and home fellowships;
• Recovery and discipleship groups;
• Homeschool teachers;
• Nonprofit educational classrooms;
• Church workshops and presentations;
• Individual students; and
• Others using the material for nonprofit education, ministry, devotion, or enrichment.

Permitted Educational Uses

Advance written permission is not required to:

• Download and save the resource;
• Display it during a lesson, class, workshop, or presentation;
• Print reasonable quantities for members of the immediate class or group;
• Share the file privately with students or participants;
• Email the resource to members of the immediate class;
• Incorporate individual slides or graphics into a noncommercial lesson;
• Select only the portions needed for a particular lesson;
• Rearrange slide order;
• Add personal teaching notes;
• Add discussion questions;
• Adjust formatting for projection or printing;
• Adapt the resource for the needs of a local class;
• Use the material in personal or family scripture study; or
• Quote and discuss the material during an educational presentation.

A Gospel Doctrine teacher, Sunday School teacher, or Come Follow Me instructor does not need to request separate written permission before using a free downloadable Faith & Reason resource in class.

Conditions of Free Educational Use

Free educational use is permitted provided that:

• The use is noncommercial;
• The resource is used for education, ministry, devotion, or personal enrichment;
• Timothy R. Berman, Faith & Reason, and any identified co-creators are credited;
• Existing copyright, attribution, and branding notices are retained where reasonably practical;
• The resource is not presented as an official publication of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints;
• The material is not modified in a way that misrepresents its original message;
• No separate fee is charged specifically for access to the resource;
• The resource is not sold or sublicensed;
• The user does not claim authorship of the original material; and
• The material is not incorporated into a commercial product without permission.

Classroom Printing and Distribution

Teachers may print and distribute reasonable quantities of a free resource to participants in their immediate class, congregation, small group, or educational setting.

This permission includes printing handouts, worksheets, acrostic summaries, discussion questions, and selected presentation slides for use during the lesson.

The material may not be printed in bulk for resale or included in a commercially distributed curriculum without written permission.

Private Electronic Sharing

Teachers may share a free downloadable resource electronically with members of their immediate class or group through:

• Email;
• Private messaging;
• A closed class group;
• A congregation communication channel;
• A password-protected classroom platform; or
• Another limited-access educational system.

When practical, teachers are encouraged to share the original Faith & Reason download-page link so participants can obtain the most current version.

Public Online Sharing

Public sharing should ordinarily direct viewers to the original Faith & Reason page rather than uploading the complete file to another public website, document archive, social-media page, commercial platform, or public download library.

This helps ensure that:

• The creator receives appropriate attribution;
• Visitors receive the current version;
• Corrections and updates remain connected to the resource;
• Accompanying explanations remain available; and
• The material is not separated from its context.

Public republication of a complete downloadable resource outside the immediate educational setting requires written permission unless the resource expressly states that public redistribution is allowed.

Sharing a screenshot, excerpt, individual slide, or link for the purpose of recommending the resource is permitted when properly attributed and not misleading.

Adaptations for Teaching

Teachers may make reasonable adaptations for a particular audience or lesson.

Permitted adaptations include:

• Selecting only the relevant slides;
• Rearranging the order of a presentation;
• Adding personal notes;
• Adding local examples;
• Adding discussion questions;
• Combining portions of the resource with original teaching material;
• Adjusting font size or layout;
• Converting a slide into a class handout; and
• Translating brief portions for the immediate needs of a local class.

Adapted material must not be presented in a way that falsely suggests Timothy R. Berman, Faith & Reason, or another identified creator wrote, approved, or endorsed the newly added material.

When practical, an adapted version should include a notice such as:

Translations

A teacher may translate portions of a free resource for use in a local, noncommercial class or study group.

Written permission should be requested before publishing or distributing a complete translated edition publicly, creating a permanent translated download, or presenting the translation as an officially authorized edition.

This allows Faith & Reason and any co-creators to review attribution, accuracy, and third-party quotation requirements.

Jointly Created Resources

Some resources may be created jointly with Jessica of Christ Pearls, or another identified collaborator.

When a jointly created resource is designated as a free educational download, the educational-use permission in this Policy applies unless the resource states otherwise.

Users must retain or reproduce the creator attribution appearing on the original resource.

A suggested attribution may read:

Created by Timothy R. Berman of Faith & Reason and Jessica of Christ Pearls.

The specific wording should follow the names and ministries identified on the original resource.

No user may remove a collaborator’s name, logo, credit, or contribution in a way that falsely suggests sole authorship.

Free-Use Notice for Download Pages

Faith & Reason may place the following notice on download pages or inside free resources:

Free Educational Use: This resource may be downloaded, displayed, printed, and reasonably adapted for noncommercial teaching, ministry, personal study, and enrichment. Please retain appropriate credit to Timothy R. Berman and Faith & Reason, along with any identified co-creators. It may not be sold, rebranded, or incorporated into a commercial product without written permission.

The absence of this notice from an older resource does not necessarily remove the permissions granted by this Policy when the resource was intentionally made available as a free download.

Commercial Use Is Not Included

The free educational-use permission does not authorize anyone to:

• Sell the resource;
• Charge for access to the download;
• Sell printed copies;
• Place it behind a paid membership;
• Include it in a paid course;
• Include it in a commercially sold curriculum;
• Use it as a paid subscriber benefit;
• Rebrand it as another person’s resource;
• Remove creator attribution;
• License it to another organization;
• Create merchandise from it;
• Use it primarily to advertise a commercial service;
• Include it in a product sold through Amazon or another retailer; or
• Create a substantially similar competing product by copying its content or design.

Written permission is required for commercial licensing, resale, large-scale republication, or uses beyond the free educational permission described above.

Content That Is Not a Free Download

The educational-use permission applies to materials intentionally offered as free downloadable resources.

It does not automatically apply to every article, image, video, graphic, manuscript, book excerpt, unpublished draft, social-media image, or other item appearing through Faith & Reason.

Unless otherwise stated, written permission is generally required before anyone:

• Republishes a complete article;
• Reproduces a substantial portion of an article;
• Copies a complete infographic that was not offered as a free download;
• Downloads and reposts website graphics publicly;
• Reuploads a complete video;
• Publishes a complete transcript;
• Reproduces an unpublished manuscript;
• Copies an entire book chapter;
• Creates a derivative publication;
• Creates an unauthorized audiobook;
• Sells copies of original material;
• Includes material in a commercial curriculum;
• Uploads material to a public archive; or
• Uses Faith & Reason content as another organization’s branded material.

Purchased Books and Digital Products

Books, devotionals, study guides, workbooks, journals, fiction, digital publications, and other paid products by Timothy R. Berman are protected works.

Purchasing a physical copy gives the purchaser ownership of that lawful physical copy. It does not transfer copyright ownership.

Purchasing or downloading a paid digital product grants only the rights stated with that product.

Unless a separate license states otherwise, purchasers may not:

• Duplicate the digital file;
• Share the download link;
• Email the complete file to others;
• Upload it to a public or private file-sharing service;
• Print copies for an entire organization;
• Resell the digital file;
• Republish worksheets or exercises;
• Create derivative products;
• Remove copyright notices; or
• Use the publication to create a competing product.

A separate group, church, classroom, or institutional license may be offered for certain paid resources.

Free-download permissions do not automatically apply to paid products.

Graphics, Infographics, and Thumbnails

Graphics, infographics, presentation slides, thumbnails, and branded visual materials remain protected unless designated as free educational downloads.

Free downloadable visuals may be used according to the educational-use permissions in this Policy.

Other visuals may not be copied, altered, reposted, sold, or used as another person’s branding without permission.

Permission to display or quote a graphic does not authorize:

• Removal of branding;
• Addition of another person’s logo;
• Sale of the graphic;
• Use on merchandise;
• Material alteration;
• Misrepresentation of its message; or
• Presentation of the graphic as official Church material.

Videos, Audio, and Transcripts

You may link to or embed an official Faith & Reason video when the hosting platform provides an authorized embedding feature.

Brief clips may sometimes be used for genuine commentary, criticism, teaching, scholarship, or review when legally appropriate and properly attributed.

Written permission is generally required to:

• Reupload a complete video;
• Publish a complete transcript;
• Extract and redistribute the full audio;
• Create an unauthorized audiobook or podcast edition;
• Sell video clips or compilations;
• Include a video in a paid course;
• Dub or translate a complete recording for public distribution; or
• Alter the recording in a misleading manner.

Nothing in this Policy determines in advance whether a specific use legally qualifies as fair use.

Scripture Quotations

Faith & Reason may quote from the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and other religious texts.

Rights in a particular Bible translation, study note, publisher’s edition, commentary, or formatting belong to the applicable rights holder unless the material is in the public domain.

Permission granted by Faith & Reason does not grant additional rights to third-party scripture translations.

Anyone republishing material containing scripture quotations remains responsible for:

• Identifying the translation;
• Following the publisher’s quotation policy;
• Including required copyright notices; and
• Obtaining additional permission where required.

Church and Third-Party Materials

Faith & Reason may include limited materials belonging to:

• The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints;
• Scripture publishers;
• Authors and scholars;
• News organizations;
• Video creators;
• Photographers;
• Artists;
• Social-media users;
• Publishers;
• Stock-media providers; and
• Other third parties.

Such materials remain the property of their respective rights holders.

The permissions in this Policy apply only to material owned or controlled by Timothy R. Berman, Faith & Reason, and any identified co-creators who have authorized the use.

Permission from Faith & Reason does not authorize reuse of independently owned third-party material.

Users remain responsible for complying with copyright notices, licenses, quotation limits, and other restrictions attached to third-party content.

Public-Domain and Licensed Materials

Some materials appearing through Faith & Reason may be:

• In the public domain;
• Used under a Creative Commons or similar license;
• Licensed from a stock-media provider;
• Used with permission;
• Supplied by a publisher;
• Quoted under an applicable legal exception; or
• Embedded through a third-party platform.

Such materials remain subject to the conditions that apply to their source.

Faith & Reason will make reasonable efforts to preserve required attribution and licensing information.

AI-Assisted and Digitally Created Materials

Faith & Reason may use artificial-intelligence tools and other digital technologies to assist with:

• Illustrations;
• Graphics;
• Image enhancement;
• Editing;
• Transcription;
• Research organization;
• Formatting; and
• Content development.

Rights are reserved in the human-authored text, selection, arrangement, editing, branding, composition, and other protectable elements of Faith & Reason materials to the extent provided by law.

The use of AI-assisted tools does not authorize another person to:

• Remove Faith & Reason branding;
• Claim authorship of the finished composition;
• Reproduce an entire presentation or infographic;
• Create deceptive imitations;
• Misrepresent the source of the material; or
• Use the resource outside the permissions granted by this Policy.

Artificial-Intelligence Training and Automated Extraction

No permission is granted to use Faith & Reason content for:

• Training a commercial artificial-intelligence model;
• Building a commercial machine-learning dataset;
• Bulk scraping;
• Automated text, image, audio, or video harvesting;
• Building a competing commercial content library;
• Automated republication;
• Producing unauthorized synthetic imitations of Timothy R. Berman’s voice, likeness, writing style, or branding; or
• Populating commercial retrieval or content-generation systems.

Ordinary search-engine indexing may occur according to the technical settings of the website and generally established indexing practices.

Researchers or developers seeking permission for a specific project should submit a written request before collecting or using the material.

RSS Feeds and Automated Syndication

Faith & Reason may provide RSS feeds or similar subscription tools.

RSS content is provided for personal reading and ordinary feed-reader use.

An RSS feed does not authorize another website or service to:

• Republish complete articles automatically;
• Mirror Faith & Reason;
• Remove attribution;
• Insert advertisements into copied content;
• Sell access to copied articles;
• Create an unauthorized archive; or
• Present Faith & Reason content as original material belonging to another publisher.

A headline, brief excerpt, and link to the original page may be used when technically and legally appropriate.

Faith & Reason Branding

The Faith & Reason name, logo, visual identity, recurring design elements, and related identifiers may be protected under copyright, trademark, unfair-competition, or other laws.

They may not be used in a way that:

• Confuses the public about the source of content;
• Suggests an official partnership;
• Impersonates Faith & Reason or Timothy R. Berman;
• Promotes another product without authorization;
• Alters the logo for another organization’s identity; or
• Falsely implies sponsorship or endorsement.

Accurate referential use of the name Faith & Reason for commentary, citation, or identification is permitted.

No Implied Endorsement

Permission to use a resource does not mean that Faith & Reason, Timothy R. Berman, Christ Pearls, Jessica, or another identified collaborator:

• Endorses the person using it;
• Approves all material in the surrounding lesson;
• Agrees with every theological conclusion presented;
• Sponsors the class or organization;
• Has entered a partnership; or
• Authorizes use of their names or logos for unrelated promotion.

Educational users remain responsible for their own additions, interpretations, and presentation.

Uses Requiring Written Permission

• Resale;

• The expected publication or presentation date; and
• The proposed attribution.

Submitting a request does not guarantee approval.

Permission is valid only when given in writing and may be limited by purpose, format, duration, territory, audience, or other stated conditions.

Failure to respond does not constitute permission.

Permission Fees

Faith & Reason may grant certain nonprofit, educational, ministry, or scholarly requests without charge.

A licensing or administrative fee may apply to:

6. A statement that the sender has a good-faith belief that the disputed use is not authorized by the owner, its agent, or the law;
7. A statement that the submitted information is accurate and that the sender is authorized to act for the copyright owner; and
8. A physical or electronic signature.

Additional documentation may be requested when reasonably necessary to evaluate the concern.

Knowingly submitting false or misleading allegations may have legal consequences.

Review of Infringement Notices

After receiving a sufficiently detailed notice, Faith & Reason may:

• Request clarification;
• Temporarily restrict access to the disputed material;
• Correct an attribution;
• Replace or remove the material;
• Contact the person who supplied it;
• Decline an unsupported request; or
• Seek qualified legal advice.

Removal does not necessarily constitute an admission of infringement.

Retention of material during review does not necessarily mean that the claim has been rejected.

This contact procedure does not represent that Faith & Reason has registered a designated statutory copyright agent or qualifies for a particular statutory safe harbor.

Material Submitted by Visitors

Commenters and contributors are responsible for ensuring that material they submit does not violate another person’s copyright or other rights.

Faith & Reason may remove comments, links, images, quotations, or other submissions when it reasonably believes they violate copyright or website policies.

Reporting Unauthorized Use of Faith & Reason Content

Suspected unauthorized copying, resale, rebranding, or redistribution of Faith & Reason content may be reported to:

Reservation of Rights

Changes to This Policy

Faith & Reason may update this Copyright and Permissions Policy when:

• Licensing practices change;
• Collaborations are added;
• New technology is adopted;
